The Challenges
One of the toughest challenges for any builder can be when they build their own home, rather than for a client.
It was no exception for David Bauer of Bauer Homes when building his family home at Batesford in rural Victoria, who admitted “it was tougher than I would have thought, as the client is really fussy”.
As a busy builder, David was after a home that would require minimal maintenance, with practical, liveable areas and superior insulation for comfortable living during chilly Victorian winters.

The Solution
With a large extended family, David designed the home divided into different quarters, with areas to accommodate the wider family during visits that was separated from the home’s main living areas and master bedroom.
He also ensured the home’s north facing orientation on the block would capture the winter sun and provide views across the surrounding bushland and countryside.
The choice of thermal insulation was an important factor in ensuring the home’s comfort. A combination of brickwork and Bondor’s LuxeWall® luxury walling panels provided the solution.
“It’s really well insulated. So it gives me a really good R rating. It’s got polystyrene inside, it’s easy to keep clean. Just a lot of benefits,” David said.
“It’s also very low maintenance, I want to be able to play golf on weekends and not spend my time out here doing things. So that was the key.”
