The Challenges
What started as a discussion to replace a run-down children’s backyard fort with ‘a little deck’ at Bardon, in Brisbane’s inner north, turned into the ultimate family playhouse ideal for young and old alike.
The homeowners approached BAAHOUSE Architecture for concepts to replace the aging and damp affected fort in their leafy backyard, which was located under trees and above a former creek bed.
Director Claus Ejlertsen examined the site with its beautiful eucalyptus trees and designed a 90m2 indoor outdoor ‘playhouse’ that felt like it was part of the natural location and flowed through to connect to the existing house.
The playhouse consists of one bedroom, an ensuite and a walk-in robe, with an adjoining open multipurpose space with large open doors and expansive decks complete with a climbing wall and slide down to the lawn below.
Claus needed a roofing product that was contemporary in style and in keeping with the existing house that offered durability and low maintenance.
The Solution
Claus chose all-in-one SolarSpan® Insulated Roofing Panel, combining a COLORBOND® steel exterior roof layer, EPS-FR rigid insulation core with a pre-finished COLORBOND® ceiling underside.
“We chose SolarSpan® as opposed to a traditional roofing system for its simplicity, functionality, and ease of installation,” Clause said.
“Where it would take one to two weeks to install a traditional roof, with SolarSpan® we didn’t need rafters, battens, insulation, or traditional flashing because it’s all one panel built together. It also means that the lights are installed on the same day too.
“So, everything is designed and installed on the same day and the result is a fantastic product that looks great.
“You can wash it down easily, which for this location under so many trees is important.
“The result is a finish with fantastic clean lines and a smart contemporary look compared to plasterboard ceilings,” he said.
