Corner Block

The Challenges

Corner Block is a commercial building on the Gold Coast, Australia, offering 2,266m2 of leasable space across 9 tenancies.

Designed as the new benchmark for sustainable workspaces, the $4 million Corner Block development is the world’s first building to meet Passive House, Green Star and WELL standards. The key points of difference that the Corner Block offers range from design aesthetics to the health and well-being of the occupants right through to technical aspects.

Ben Sinclair, creator of Corner Block, spent over two years designing and three years in construction. Whether it’s the paints and coatings, material choices, or construction techniques, every aspect of the project was tailored to create a progressive and healthy workspace.

For Ben, his intention was to ensure the building would continue to perform in the long term, whether for 10 years, 20, 30 or 50 years.

The Solution

Metecno PIR’s widely adopted MetecnoSpan insulated roofing was selected to help the Corner Block meet sustainability, energy efficiency and healthy building standards.

The all-in-one nature of MetecnoSpan panelling meant the one product catered to the function of interior and exterior roofing applications. Further, its low volatile organic compound (VOC) finishing contributed heavily towards achieving the high sustainability and healthy building standards required for the building’s three target certifications.

MetecnoSpan also reduced the overall cost of the project due to its higher affordability in comparison to conventional roofing systems and its unique design. The interior finishing on MetecnoSpan panels eliminated the need for a suspended ceiling during the development, thereby reducing the number of onsite tradesmen required.

“In the past, buildings that are sustainable and green have always been considered to have a cost premium,” Ben said.

“The idea from the start was to do it at a cost base that other people could see value in to be transparent in the materials that we’ve used and the process that we’ve used. The Corner Block is a real-life example that can provide inspiration for others to build great buildings themselves.”

Delivering an all-in-one composite roof, insulation and ceiling for residential and commercial builds, Bondor Metecno’s Insulated Roof Panels deliver sustainability, productivity, extreme thermal efficiency and longevity – GreenRate Level A certified and FM Global approved.
