There is nothing quite like the Australian outdoor lifestyle, and there is nothing more Australian than the patio in which to enjoy it with family and friends.

From birthday parties to barbeques, from large get togethers to taking some time out to just sit and think, the great Australian patio is a versatile space with a multitude of uses.

But what is the best patio design for your home, and your lifestyle?

We’ve broken down the many and varied designs:

Attached Skillion Patio

For a quick, simple and cost-effective addition to any home, an attached skillion patio roof will extend your living area, provide a multi-use carport, boat port, or general covered area to protect you and your most valuable possessions from the heat and cold.

A skillion patio typically features a single sloping roof attached to the exterior wall of your home. The roof slope is steeper than that of a standard pitched roof, not only offering a striking, contemporary appearance but also efficient water runoff.

The attached skillion patio is also relatively easy to construct compared to more complex roofing designs, making it a straightforward option to enhance your outdoor living space.

Your patio designer and installer will be able to assist you design the perfect under cover area adding value to any outdoor area of your home.

Free Standing Patio

A free standing patio design offers an oasis away from the home positioned in front of a pool or a cosy spot in the yard perfect for weekend gatherings, family events, or regular outdoor dining.

Unlike attached patios that are connected to your home, a free standing patio stands independently in the yard or garden, allowing it to be erected anywhere with enough space. Depending on the climate, your personal preferences, and intended use, the patio can be left open-air or fitted with awnings or shade sails to provide protection from the weather.

You can choose from a flat or gently sloping roof to a more elaborate pitched or gabled roof, depending on your desired aesthetic and functional requirements.

Your patio designer and installer can offer a gable or skillion roof design for a free standing patio with a variety of exciting beam and post options to complement your home.

Fly Over Patio

A fly over patio is designed to sit above, over, or higher than your home’s existing roof.  Typically, the fly over roof is attached to ‘float’ above your home’s roof line and overlap it, allowing for more ventilation and light if you have a particularly low existing roof line.

This is a good option for low-set houses where you want to achieve greater height for the patio roof and allow more light into your home as well as more open space in your entertaining area.

The added height allows you to install ceiling fans which may be desirable in hotter tropical and sub-tropical climates.

Create architecturally pleasing roof lines to enhance your home and breathe new life into an existing deck or patio with newfound space and added comfort all year round.

Gable Patio

A gable patio is a classic and popular outdoor structure characterised by its distinctive letter “A” triangular shape with two sloping sides that meet in the middle.

Gable patios offer a timeless and classic design that complements a wide range of architectural styles. You can further enhance the visual appeal with decorative elements such as exposed rafters, trusses, or architectural accents that complement the style of your home.

Create a grand opening to your outdoor living area with a gable roof whilst giving your patio additional height and ventilation of hot air. A variety of gable infill and beam options are available from your patio designer and installer to deliver an exciting patio design.

Two Storey Patio

Two storey homes are perfect for a patio roof to extend the upstairs living area outdoors without obstructing scenic views and keeping your family cool and outdoors longer during social events.

A two storey patio is typically built on the second story of your home, extending outward from an upper-level room or balcony, creating a covered space underneath.

A two storey patio creates an impressive open living area with high ceilings for additional head room, air flow, and light.

If your home is located on an elevated block, then a two storey patio may be the addition for you. The elevated position of the patio provides a unique vantage point, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Designed to seamlessly integrate with existing roof lines, it is an architecturally pleasing addition to enhance your home and breathe new life into an existing deck or patio with newfound space and added comfort all year round.
